“Milk and caramelized hazelnut” chocolate bar by Le chocolat des Français
It’s not just French Tech startups that attract investors. In early 2016, the artisanal chocolate brand “Le chocolat des Français” managed to raise €500,000 with several Business Angels “including Kima Ventures, Xavier Niel’s investment fund,” explains Paul-Henri Masson, co-founder of the brand launched in November 2014. The money raised has helped to expand the sales teams. Winner of the 2015 Babybrand Food competition, Le chocolat des Français is the fruit of a meeting between a couple of purists sharing two passions in art school: “the graphic arts, and, of course, chocolate”.
80,000 chocolate bars sold in 2015
Based in Paris, the brand featuring the frog logo combines the expertise of an independent chocolatier – who manufactures chocolate bars in the Yvelines – with pop, colorful packaging. “Very quickly, we called on artist friends to produce our packaging designs: street artists, graphic designers, comic strip artists… We wanted them to imagine our chocolate bars like a comic book page,” stresses Paul-Henri Masson. 80,000 bars produced by Le chocolat des Français were sold in 2015, mainly with a young and urban target market, fond of shopping on the Internet, in concept stores and delicatessens, achieving a turnover of €200,000. The young company aims to double that figure in 2016. The company had also the chance to make a name for themselves at the Salon du Chocolat in October, where it presented its new collaborations with renowned artists.
